The media made much of a joint walk between a Muslim organisation, Jimas, and the English Defence League (EDL) to lay wreathes in Ipswich two weeks ago.

Manwar Ali, chief executive of Jimas, told Socialist Worker they wanted to help “peace and harmony in Ipswich”. But he now thinks taking part in the walk was “politically naive”.

Since the walk he has come to believe that such joint actions with “a known fascist, racist and Islamophobic organisation known to target other communities and political groupings” are “counterproductive”.

He said they “will not be engaging in any public activity organised by the EDL in future”.
