Back the STA in NUT teaching union elections

by Paul McGarr
Issue No. 2358

Elections are coming up in the NUT teaching union including a vice presidential election in November.

Socialist Workers Party members met last Sunday and voted to conditionally support the two candidates from the Socialist Teachers Alliance (STA).

The STA is a left grouping in the union which SWP members work within.

The election will take place as the union is due to be engaged in strikes with the NASUWT union to defend teachers (see page 7).

The STA candidates have committed to help lead the planned strike campaign and to continue that fight even if the NASUWT union retreats from it.

They are also committed to working seriously to build united campaigns against racism and the far right, and on initiatives around the curriculum.

Socialist Workers Party members’ support for the candidates is conditional on these commitments remaining firm.

Teachers should get nominations for the candidates through their NUT branches.
