A police officer giving evidence at the inquest into the death of Smiley Culture said the singer used a kitchen knife to stab himself.
An inquest heard that the singer, whose real name was David Emmanuel, “completely changed” when having a tea and chat with officers while they searched his home in Surrey on 15 March 2011.
The officer providing evidence, named only as Witness 2, said David produced a knife and screamed at him.
Speaking on behalf of Witness 2, Surrey coroner Richard Travers told the inquest, “Witness 2 will tell you that Mr Emmanuel’s face and body language had completely changed, he became angry and was screaming.
“He will tell you that he, Mr Emmanuel, then held the knife with both hands and plunged it into his own chest.”
Travers added, “For his part you will hear from Witness 2’s evidence, Mr Emmanuel appeared to be relaxed and they chatted about a variety of things.”
Dr Nathaniel Cary carried out a second post-mortem examination on David.
He told the inquest, “Whilst it is clearly possible that the fatal stab wound was, as described, a self-inflicted injury, on pathological grounds alone there is nothing to determine that this was in fact the case, although it is fair to say that the site chosen is one of the sites that may be used in self-infliction.”
