Socialist Worker

The Negro Tradegian

Issue No. 2361

This radio documentary, presented by actor Kwame Kwei-Armah, is about the life and career of 19th century American-born black actor Ira Aldridge.

When Aldridge first appeared on stage in London in 1825 he got an enthusiastic response from the audience and the public—even though the critics hated him.

Despite establishment racism Aldridge became a famously fine Shakespearean actor and star.

He toured all over Britain and Europe and eventually won medals and honours for acting.
