Alec Reed Academy teachers challenge sacking

Issue No. 2362

Teachers at the Alec Reed Academy in Ealing, west London, met last week following the sacking of a teacher.

The NUT union members passed a motion calling for an independent investigation into the sacking.

It also called for the teacher to be reinstated on full pay and suspended from work during the investigation.

If management don’t agree, workers called on the NUT to ballot them for sustained and discontinuous strikes to win the teacher’s reinstatement.

Workers in the NUT and NASUWT unions at the school took three days of strikes against excessive workload and bullying earlier this year.

Teachers think the sacking is related to the strike.

One teacher told Socialist Worker, “I think that management want to send a message to the rest of us.

“The head teacher who was making us miserable has gone. But now the post is being advertised as a CEO.

“I’ve worked at the school for 10 years and I don’t know how I have survived so long.”

NUT and NASUWT union officials were set to meet management on Thursday of this week.
