Firefighters prepare for face-off with bosses

Voting is underway in the firefighters’ FBU union strike ballot against attacks on their pensions and the fire service. With a decent yes vote expected, firefighters could be on strike in September.

Fire chiefs are preparing to bring in strikebreakers in response. The Manchester force is bringing in 96 volunteers who train for 17 days.

Derbyshire wants 50 “reserve fire crew members” and is offering them only two weeks training.

Phil Coates, regional chair of the East Midlands Fire Brigades Union, said “If you bring in grocers and butchers and expect them to do the job you’re asking for trouble.

“I do fear for their own safety as well as members of the public.”
