Paul O’Grady’s Working Britain

Who better to make being working class a “badge of pride” again than TV’s favourite proletarian presenter? But sadly Paul O’Grady’s series was too bold for BBC bosses.

They slashed a third of its length, removed the word “class” from the title and drove the academics who worked on it to get their names taken off the credits.

It’s still a pleasant exercise in nostalgia. But far from fighting the workers’ corner, it fashionably reduces them to a relic of history.
