Strike at Liverpool council called off

Issue No. 2367

The GMB and Unite unions called off all industrial action by service staff employed by Amey at Liverpool council.

Street cleaners, road maintenance workers and grounds staff were set to walk out on Friday of last week.

A work to rule, also involving refuse workers, has also been called off.

Union officials say stewards overwhelmingly agreed to a 1 percent pay rise and a one off lump sum. This is well below inflation, and the 3 percent that unions were originally demanding.

Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson personally intervened to end the dispute.

Previous action (pictured) had left bins overflowing. But GMB official George Patterson said staff had agreed to work extra shifts to clear the backlog.
