Human cost of vile policy

Issue No. 2369

A man driven to despair by the bedroom tax tried to kill himself at a council housing office in Fife, Scotland, last week. It happened after the ex-miner asked for help with rent arrears due to the hated tax. He recently received a council letter demanding £28 more in rent every fortnight. Living on disability benefits and a small miner’s pension he can’t afford the extra money.

Louise McCleary is a Kirkcaldy Axe the Bedroom Tax activist. She told Socialist Worker the news shocked her but it wasn’t surprising due to the pressure people are under. She said, “It doesn’t need to be like this. We can appeal the decisions—we don’t have to accept it. “We hope people get in touch with campaign groups like ours because we can do something. “We can fight to get rid of the bedroom tax.”
