Car convoy against children’s ward cuts at Bedford Hospital

A colourful protest against the closure of Bedford Hospital’s Riverbank children’s ward took place last Saturday.

The Luton People’s Assembly organised the well attended event. The protest took the form of a car convoy.

Trade union flags flew from the 20 cars on the convoy from Bedford Hospital, where the ward is due to close.

They made the 22 mile journey to the Luton & Dunstable Hospital.

This is the route that sick children and their families will be forced to take to access treatment.

PCS, Unite, GMB, USDAW, NUT and FBU unions were  all represented in the procession.

Passersby waved and cars joined the line sounding their horns in support.

Bedford TUC backed the action. It followed a large protest of 400 people the previous Saturday.

Around 40 people attended the short rally at the finish of the convoy in Luton’s Lewsey Park. There was a strong feeling that the pressure should be maintained.

And all those present are now building for the anti-cuts demo at the Tory party conference in Manchester on 29 September.
