Sheffield stands against EDL demo

Issue No. 2372

Some 250 people joined a Unite Against Fascism (UAF) protest in north Sheffield to oppose a rally by the racist English Defence League (EDL).

The EDL pulled in 300 of its members from around Britain to protest at plans to turn a closed down pub into a mosque. Around 1,200 cops surrounded the rally and shut roads to facilitate the racists’ protest. UAF has called a protest against the EDL in Bradford on 12 October.

Over 350 people rallied at the Greek embassy in west London last Saturday against the murder of rapper Pavlos Fylass by a Nazi Golden Dawn member.

The mostly Greek crowd included representatives of the three main currents on the Greek left. Speakers included people from Unite Against Fascism and the Socialist Workers Party.
