Workers at Wallsend Memorial Hall and People’s Centre in North Tyneside have been in occupation over job losses and unpaid wages since Friday 13 September.
The People’s Centre, known as the Mem, is rooted in the trade union movement. It has hosted community services such as youth groups and welfare advice for the people of Wallsend.
Its board of trustees applied to the Social Investment Business (SIB) in 2011 for a loan and grant to refurbish the centre.
The SIB is government funded and has close links to the Tory party.
Under the SIB’s management, the Mem has been forced into receivership.
Workers are angry with SIB for refusing to pay their wages. The occupation will continue until workers’ wages, jobs, and the future of the centre are secure.
