Fresh clashes shake Egypt

Police killed over 50 people in Egypt last weekend and more than 200 people were arrested. Demonstrations to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1973 Arab-Israeli war took place on Sunday 6 October, a national holiday in Egypt.

Thousands of supporters of the military gathered to celebrate in Cairo’s Tahrir Square as jets flew in formation overhead.

The army broadcast patriotic songs from loadspeakers and controlled all access to the square, with searches and metal detectors on the only two entrances open. Police opened fire on protests organised by supporters of Muslim Brotherhood former president Mohammed Mursi who tried to rally near the square.
