Amplats strikers win concessions in South Africa

Issue No. 2375

Striking platinum miners at South Africa’s Amplats company returned to work last week following concessions from bosses. A planned 3,300 redundancies have been shifted from being compulsory to voluntary by the strike.

The AMCU union led the strike, one of its first to be official. It has eclipsed the NUM as the dominant union in the mines since the Marikana massacre last year.

Last weekend also saw the official launch of Julius Malema’s new Economic Freedom Fighters party with a rally of 15,000 at Marikana.
