Rina White

SOCIALISTS IN Chesterfield were saddened to hear of the recent death of Rina White, a lifelong socialist and anti-racist. During her working life as an auxiliary nurse Rina gained a reputation both as a NUPE trade union activist and as a champion of the patients she cared for. A wife and mother of striking miners, she played a key role in sustaining the strike of 1984-5.

Rina was an active anti-racist and joined the Socialist Workers Party in the aftermath of the Welling anti-Nazi protests in 1993. She took an active part in local activities until ill health prevented her. We send our condolences to her family. Rina will be remembered with affection and pride by socialists.

Alwen Gough

ALWEN GOUGH, a long-standing and much loved member of Leeds SWP, died on 19 August. Alwen joined the SWP in the late 1970s and quickly became one of Leeds' most active members. She was an instinctive fighter with a fierce sense of justice. Her energy, enthusiasm and sense of humour won her the respect of everyone she worked with.

Alwen became seriously ill in 1996, but her commitment never waned. She fought a long battle against cancer with the same tenacity she brought to everything she did. She will be greatly missed. Our condolences to her family.
