Stand up for council housing
BRITAIN'S BIGGEST council landlord is on course to hand its homes to a private housing company.
Glasgow council, run by New Labour, wants to hand all its 90,000 council homes to a specially created private company, Glasgow Housing Association (GHA). It plans to hold a ballot of all council tenants, probably in November. The council claims GHA is "not for profit". In fact, the company will make a profit-they just call it a "surplus".
Tenants will have far less secure tenancies, and rents are likely to rise by far more than supposed "guarantees" given by the privateers. Tenants will lose any real democratic control over their landlord. A major campaign to defend council housing in Glasgow and in the dozens of other areas lined up for privatisation is needed.
A key step will be the Stand Up For Council Housing Day on Saturday 22 September, which will see rallies and leafleting around the country. The day is backed by tenants' organisations like Defend Council Housing, and major unions.
