Two men shot

Disarm the killer cops

The police shot two men dead in the street in four days. Officers shot Andrew Kernan, a schizophrenic man, twice in the chest near his home in Wavertree, Liverpool, on Thursday of last week.

Scotland Yard officers shot another man in Brixton, south London, six times on Monday of this week. They claimed he had a handgun. It was a cigarette lighter.

The victims' families are furious. Marie, the mother of Andrew Kernan, called the police after she and psychiatric workers became concerned about his behaviour.

She said, "I can't believe this. The way my son's been treated you would think he was a criminal. He's never had so much as a driving offence. My son was just ill. Care in the community? Don't make me laugh-there is none."

She said that she was "absolutely disgusted" at the police action against Andrew. "I want justice for Andrew. We want a lot of questions answered." There have been 24 fatal shootings by police in England and Wales since 1990. Yet officers have tried to silence victims' families by attempting to ban a film that highlights injustice cases (see page 14).
