Medical secretaries

'We can win more'

THE MEDICAL secretaries' dispute in Scotland was delicately poised as Socialist Worker went to press. A deal thrashed out by UNISON union leaders went to the Scottish health committee on Tuesday to decide whether to recommend acceptance or rejection. Overall the deal is worth about a 1,000 a year increase. But it falls far short of what could be won.

Scottish health bosses are obviously worried by the level of anger and militancy among rank and file workers. Two weeks ago secretaries at Lothian Acute Health walked out for half a day. The week before secretaries in Lanarkshire walked for a similar amount of time. All this action is unofficial.

We need to build rank and file secretaries' groups across Scotland, link these up, and begin to campaign for the full claim that is clearly within our grasp.

  • MIDWIVES AT Cardiff hospitals are refusing to work overtime. They are angry that management is to cut overtime rates by 20 to 50 percent.
