Defend Council Housing
SOME 60 representatives from the key areas threatened with housing privatisation met in Birmingham on Saturday at the Defend Council Housing campaign strategy and national committee meeting to plan the next phase of the campaign. The strategy statement, minutes of the meeting and list of authorities on the 2001 transfer list are available from the campaign website www.defendcouncilhousing.org.uk
We want to get meetings in each area soon. Defend Council Housing wants to organise the autumn campaign involving representatives from the tenants' movement, trade unions, campaigns, and supportive councillors and MPs. We hope to get the national organisations that supported the lobby of parliament in January and the Manifesto for Council Housing to back our proposals. They include a "Stand Up for Council Housing" day on 22 September with one million leaflets, loudspeaker cars, a campaign bus, street stalls and public meetings. We also plan a significant presence at the TUC and Labour Party conferences.
This will be followed by a Defend Council Housing national conference in late October. The GMB union has agreed to affiliate to the campaign. The MSF and GMPU conferences also supported affiliation, and the RMT was due to discuss a similar motion this week.
At Unison conference a Defend Council Housing speaker addressed a very well attended and productive conference fringe meeting in Brighton. The campaign needs money. We know what we need to do, but we are dependent on affiliation fees, donations, mailing subscriptions and bulk purchase of material to cover costs.
Please help the campaign by raising the issue with other organisations in your area. Alan walter, North London
