PALESTINE RIGHTS campaigners gathered at Sheffield Town Hall last week for a vigil to protest against the continued violence of the Israeli state in the Occupied Territories. The Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) was joined by members of Sheffield Socialist Alliance. Hundreds of leaflets were distributed to the public.

The PSC has a national conference, "Building the Solidarity Movement", on Saturday 30 June at the University of London Union, from 11am to 4.30pm. It will be chaired by Tony Benn and is open to all.

THE SOUTH Wales anti-GATS collective held its first demonstration on Wednesday of last week. About 30 of us gathered by the Aneurin Bevan statue in Cardiff. "We dressed as fat cats to highlight the way the GATS agreement will lead to the privatisation of services around the globe," says Rachel Eborall.

UNISON MEMBERS at British Gas have voted to reject the company's pay offer by almost two to one. They also voted by 56 percent for industrial action to win a better offer. Reduced annual leave and Sunday working for new starters are tied to the pay deal.

PENSIONER ACTIVISTS planned a protest in Crawley, Sussex, on Wednesday of this week against the council raising the rent it charges the Age Concern charity. The Labour-run council wants to up the rent from 114 a year to a massive 21,500. "The rent rise is a disgrace," says Muriel Hirsch, who stood for the Socialist Alliance in the area at the general election.
