Anti-Bush demos in Spain

THOUSANDS OF people marched though the Spanish capital, Madrid, on Sunday to protest against this week's visit of US president George W Bush. Bush arrived in Spain on Tuesday on the first part of a European tour that was also to take him to the European Union leaders' summit in Gothenburg in Sweden on Thursday.

"Bush go home!" chanted Spanish protesters, and, "No to neo-liberal globalisation. No to the destruction of the climate"-a reference to Bush's rejection of even the mild Kyoto agreement to cut the greenhouse gas emissions which cause global warming.

A major series of anti-globalisation conferences and demonstrations was planned for Gothenburg when Bush arrived there. Meanwhile across Europe activists are continuing to build for what should be the biggest anti-capitalist protest yet, at the G8 richest countries' summit in Genoa in Italy in July.

From Britain a special train is filling up fast. Some protesters are organising coaches and cars while others plan to hitch-hike to Genoa.
