March for NDO

POSTAL WORKERS at the NDO mail centre in north London and distribution staff in the NW1, NW2, NW3, NW10 and NW12 areas started a strike ballot this week. It is in response to Royal Mail's plan to shut NDO and move work out of north London.

The ballot was originally to start some weeks ago but was postponed after management offered further talks. Now Royal Mail has started to move work out. Staff in N1 deliveries were due to strike officially for 24 hours this week over separate issues.

Pressure from the union branch has forced local MP and cabinet minister Chris Smith to declare that Royal Mail's plans are "a tragedy". The other Islington MP, Jeremy Corbyn, has supported the CWU union's battle from the start.

The Socialist Alliance fully backs the union fightback and will be working to get a good turnout on the march called by the CWU union.

  • March to defend NDO, Saturday 26 May, assemble 11.30am, Gibson Square, London N1. Rally speakers include John Keggie (deputy general secretary CWU), Chris Smith MP and Jeremy Corbyn MP.
