WE DISCOVERED on Thursday of last week that between 50,000 and 70,000 carcasses were to be buried at the Deepmoor site near Torrington in Devon. Local activists, who have recently protested against a planned incinerator, organised a picket of the site last Friday and Saturday.
There are serious concerns about leakage from this site. In 1995 a nearby lake had to be drained because of pollution from a leak from Deepmoor.

OVER 80 residents of the North Derbyshire village of Duckmanton packed into a meeting on Friday of last week organised by the North Derbyshire Socialist Alliance to protest against the dumping of animal carcasses into the Erin landfill site.
The government's own guidelines for disposing of carcasses are being breached every day at the site, which is run by Viridor, a private waste management company.
