A hot May Day

FIREFIGHTERS and control room staff in Berkshire have voted by a staggering 81 percent on a 76 percent turnout to strike to defend eight full time jobs. The first strike has been called for Tuesday of next week, May Day. One FBU union member told Socialist Worker, "We are facing these cuts under the government's so called 'Best Value' scheme."

The Berkshire firefighters' fight is of national significance. Meetings of the FBU in many areas of the country, including a large London-wide reps' meeting earlier this year, have identified "Best Value" as a major threat. Berkshire FBU is calling for support for a rally on the day of the strike.
