Refugees attacked in Glasgow
Racist filth led to this
By Mark Brown
THE REALITY of what happens when politicians play the race card was tragically shown last week when the Palestinian refugees pictured here were attacked by a mob of 40 people in Glasgow.
When politicians spout racism, vicious attacks on black and Asian people follow. Senior police officers confirmed this last week. One high ranking officer at Scotland Yard said, "The most serious trend we have seen is a rise in reports of incidents when the issue of asylum seekers and refugees is brought into the public domain by reputable politicians making inflammatory statements."
Reports of race hate crimes increased threefold in March after Tory leader William Hague's speech about Britain becoming a "foreign land". Scapegoating asylum seekers has been seized on by the Nazi British National Party (BNP).
Its leader, Nick Griffin, said on Tuesday, "It legitimises the idea that we cannot afford to have asylum seekers here in the first place." The gang of 40 white people put these words into action last weekend in Glasgow. They wielded baseball bats and bottles in two attacks against Palestinian refugee brothers Haitham and Iyad Saada, who are now in hospital with serious injuries.
The Saadas are refugees from the war in southern Lebanon. Haitham suffered appalling injuries during an Israeli bombing which killed his wife. He believed he would find safe refuge in Britain. Instead he and his brothers found themselves forcibly moved to Glasgow under New Labour's dispersal scheme. The Tories are grubbing in the gutter by whipping up racism to win votes. New Labour's anti-asylum policies have encouraged them.
We need more than words. We need to fight against racist laws and drive the racists out of the police. Inside
