A long wait for trains

MORE RAIL chaos will result from the latest cost-cutting plan by Britain's largest train operating company. National Express runs nine of Britain's 25 train franchises. It plans to merge three of them together-WAGN, Silverlink and c2c. Experts say that the disruption and loss of expertise will result in further problems for passengers.

Similar mergers are expected to follow amongst other train franchises that want to make up for the money they have lost while the railways have been in turmoil. The Strategic Rail Authority is encouraging such "consolidation" to boost finances.

PASSENGERS on London Underground face delays and overcrowding for the next 20 years under the government's privatisation plan. London Underground documents revealed last week that:

  • An upgrade of the Bakerloo and District lines may not be completed until 2019.
  • New trains for the Bakerloo line may not be delivered until 2019.
