HOUSING campaigners are determined to up the pressure on the government in the run-up to the general election. A series of initiatives and major rallies are set to drive home the message of the recently launched "Stand up for council housing" tenants' manifesto. The manifesto is backed by the UNISON, GMB and UCATT trade unions, the TAROE national tenants organisation, and the Defend Council Housing and Daylight Robbery housing campaigns.
A London rally is planned for next Tuesday, and others are already planned in Sheffield, Bradford and Huddersfield. Other local initiatives include the launch of a special pre-election tenants newssheet by tenants' organisations in Camden, north London. The borough's tenants federation asked all prospective parliamentary candidates in the area for their view on housing and has printed all their responses in the newssheet.
Some 15,000 copies will be going out to all Camden tenants in the coming weeks.
