BUS WORKERS in Norwich took unofficial action last Saturday over traffic congestion caused by the opening of a new shopping centre. The drivers are all employees of First Eastern Counties, which is part of the multinational First Group.
Their action caused long delays around the city centre by simply obeying the law and driving within the bus lane. At one point a foreman came out to try to intimidate drivers into joining the other lane. He gave up after a while. Police arrived but could only look on as drivers obeyed the law. One driver said, "It's the council's fault-it was always going to cause chaos. They should close the city centre to cars, and extend the park and ride service. "There are already high levels of stress in this job. This just adds to it."
