Safety date

THE RAIL unions have called a national day of action on rail safety on Thursday 29 March-the same day as the next planned strike on London's tube. It will also be the day that voting papers go out for a ballot on action among train crews. Meanwhile left wing Labour MP Tony Benn has handed in to parliament the national petition calling on the government to take back the railways into public ownership. "I started to count the signatures but had to give up at 20,000," said Benn.

Quick action

OVER 1,000 workers walked out at GEC Marconi's plant in Wavertree in Liverpool last Friday after six workers were suspended. "We had to act quickly. There was no time for a ballot," said MSF union shop steward Sue Tallon, "so we held a mass meeting and our members walked straight off the plant."

No to peanuts

"WE WON'T go back now for just a few more peanuts," says Margaret Swan. She is one of 120 workers at the Team Valley Brush company in Gateshead now in the second week of strike action over pay. Workers complain that their basic pay is less than �4 an hour.

Fourth strike

COUNCIL WORKERS in Knowsley on Merseyside were to strike on Tuesday and Wednesday in their fight against being made to work longer hours. The action is the fourth strike they have mounted. A solidarity rally is planned on 31 March with UNISON leader Dave Prentis speaking.

College in fury

STUDENTS AND staff at the University of East London are furious at plans to impose �2.9 million cuts. Students staged a protest occupation last Friday. "We're run like a business and we're not a business," said some of the students. The cuts will see the language department axed and will affect the creche.
