Warrant sales date scandal
LABOUR MEMBERS of the Scottish Parliament have given fresh life to the barbaric procedure of warrant sales. At these sales people in debt can have their possessions dragged onto the streets and auctioned off. Earlier this year Labour MSPs revolted against party leaders and backed a bill from Tommy Sheridan and others to abolish warrant sales.
Last week they had to decide on when the abolition should take place. The parliament's local government committee had suggested April next year. But Labour MPs joined the Tories and voted for December 2002. As the Lothian Poverty Alliance says, "This move means that an extra 90,000 people could be submitted to shame and humiliation. Thousands of children will see their parents humbled and reduced to tears, some contemplating suicide."
