Shut down incinerator
"WE DON'T want our lungs turned brown, shut the cancer factory down," chanted around 100 people as they marched through Edmonton in north London last Saturday. They were demanding the closing down of a huge rubbish incinerator in the area. The threat to health from the pollution was highlighted recently when Greenpeace activists scaled the chimney at the plant. Everything that is shoved into the incinerator reappears as gas or ash that is scattered mainly over the five kilometres around the plant. It emits 56 kilograms of arsenic and 35 kilograms of mercury, plus unknown amounts of deadly dioxin every year.
