Old in need
SCOTTISH pensioners are living in damp, squalid homes and dying early because of lack of money and care. This shocking picture was revealed in an Age Concern survey released this week. It found:
- 8,000 pensioners' homes are unfit for occupation and 90 percent are in urgent need of repair.
- Around 2,500 more elderly people died from cold-related illnesses in Scotland than in Scandinavia, despite the colder temperatures there.
- A third of pensioners do not claim the means tested benefits they are entitled to because they find the process degrading and confusing.
But the tax and benefit reforms introduced by chancellor Gordon Brown will expand means testing.
