Round-up

  • THE LIBERAL Democrat controlled council in Sheffield is threatening to privatise the direct services organisation following its decision to sell off its 63,000 council houses. The jobs and conditions of 1,600 manual workers are under threat.
  • REFUSE WORKERS in Brighton and Hove occupied their depots on 9 November against private waste contractor Seta. The GMB union members are furious that Seta refuses to pay them money agreed over the summer when it took over the contract for rubbish collection in the two south coast towns. The workers are now balloting for official action.
  • OVER 60 people attended a meeting in Tower Hamlets, east London, last week to launch a campaign against the Labour council's threat to consider the wholesale privatisation of the borough's council homes. Representatives from several tenants' and residents' organisations as well as council workers' trade unions attended, and agreed to build a campaign.
