Cop slams jail

"LOCKING PEOPLE up is not the answer." So said the head of the Association of Chief Police Officers, Tony Burden, last week.

His comments are in direct contradiction to New Labour's mania for locking people up, and Tony Blair's talk of filling "vacancies" in jail. There are now a record 67,000 people crammed into Britain's jails. Yet police chief Burden says, "The vast, vast majority of people who are subject to imprisonment quite simply shouldn't be in prison in the first place."
