SOME 400 workers at the British Gypsum factory in East Leake and Newark in Nottinghamshire held a one-day strike on Thursday of last week. The workers, members of the GMB union, are fighting for a pay rise.

One worker said, "We were promised a decent wage increase once the firm started doing well. "But we have only been offered 3.5 percent. The firm made record profits this year and we have asked for 6 percent."

The workers were due to hold another one-day strike this week.
