Still more tests

THE GOVERNMENT is subjecting children to yet more tests. The new tests for nine and 13 year olds are "optional". But there will be intense pressure to get teachers to put "bright" children through them. Children already sit national tests at seven, 11, 14 and 16. The only purpose of the new tests is to create another means of ranking schools. They go hand in hand with the spread of "specialist schools" and "academies" which mean further selection.
