'Tsar' Casey's new outrage
NEW LABOUR "Homelessness Tsar" Louise Casey is threatening to cut funding to any homeless charity which doesn't back the government's campaign to urge people not to give money to street beggars. The government announced the 240,000 advertising campaign earlier this month. In a meeting with charities last week Casey threatened, "Anybody who is touched by my funding and doesn't sign up has got to come and see me later if you want out."
New Labour is trying to bully charities from organising opposition to its plans to deal with the homeless. Yet many ordinary people are disgusted by the government's scapegoating of the poor. "Without help, people are not just going to stop [taking drugs] because you hit them on the money front," said Jenny Blackwell of the Brighton Housing Trust, who bravely spoke out last week.
- CENTREPOINT, the only refuge for under 16 year old runaways in London, is to close at the end of October because of financial problems. This will leave hundreds of vulnerable young people without support in the capital.
