March for refugees

AROUND 500 people marched through Newcastle last Saturday demanding rights for asylum seekers.

Some 37 organisations had backed the demonstration including Cleveland TUC, the North East Pensioners Association and Newcastle Trades Council. Teesside MSF and the TGWU's Middlesbrough Stagecoach branch ran a bus full of people to the march.

The campaign launched in the summer by unions and refugee groups has got New Labour on the defensive over the issue of vouchers for asylum seekers. Now everyone needs to drive that offensive home and make sure the hated scheme is scrapped.

  • Asylum seekers are welcome here. March to immigration minister Barbara Roche's surgery, Saturday 7 October. Assemble 10.30am, Ducketts Common, Turnpike Lane, London N8.
