Care betrayal

CHRISTINE Hancock, general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, has attacked New Labour's plan to charge elderly people for care in residential homes. The royal commission on long term care said in 1998 that all charges for personal care like bathing, changing dressings and assistance with eating should be scrapped.

New Labour has ignored this recommendation. Instead Alan Milburn, the health secretary, wants to push through a plan that will turf elderly people out of hospitals and put them in profit-making private homes. Milburn's plan means that many elderly people will have to sell their homes to pay for residential care.

Not only does New Labour deny a decent pension, it also batters older people over care.
