Slurs cause staff crisis
PUPILS RETURNED to school in England and Wales this week to find the worst shortage of teachers for a decade. Constant sniping from the media and politicians has driven thousands of teachers from the profession and deterred others from joining it. London alone is short of over 1,000 teachers. The crisis is especially acute in maths and modern languages.
Many schools are dependent on supply teachers from Australia and New Zealand. There are fears that the crisis could deepen when those teachers take advantage of cheaper flights to return home later this term. Real hourly pay for teachers has declined by 1.5 percent since 1992.
