WORKERS AT Floplast printers in Kent are to ballot for strike action in defence of six sacked workers. The six are key activists in the fight to win union recognition at the plant, near Sittingbourne.

Workers voted unanimously at mass meetings to demand that their GPMU union officials call an official strike ballot to win back the workers' jobs and win recognition. Over half the workforce have joined the GPMU. Under the new laws, that should entitle them to automatic recognition.

But management sacked the six in order to intimidate others. Rumours abound that the GMB union has also put in a claim for union recognition. This only muddies the waters. The GPMU has acted on the call to fight to reinstate the six. It must now put its full weight into the fight. A good way to begin would be for GPMU leader Tony Dubbins to speak at a rally near the plant.
