A report produced last week revealed the amazing cost that goes into inspecting universities. The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education Costs, which produces reports on universities, runs up an annual bill of �250 million.

An inspection of one department at the University of Leeds produced enough paper to fill an entire wall with files. A department at Newcastle filled two skips with paper. Each inspection takes up 1.8 years of an academic's work.
