New Labour's drive to get people off benefits and into work was exposed as a sham in a survey last week.

The Manchester Low Pay Unit found that vacancies shown in job centres in Lancashire were likely to keep people in poverty.

Two fifths of jobs were offering pay below tax thresholds. Three fifths were below income support levels for a couple with two children.
