Nuke threat

UP TO 1,000 jobs could be lost if the government goes ahead with its latest privatisation. New Labour plans to hand the contract for the maintenance of Trident nuclear missile submarines to private firm Babcock Engineering.

The move threatens jobs at the Trident base at Faslane on the Clyde. Union leaders are rightly opposing the plan. But they should also be campaigning for the scrapping of Trident, and for the workers' skills to be used for producing things people need.
