Blair's Britain

RAIL companies want to swell their profits by stopping people buying cheap tickets. The privatised train operators have put forward a plan to strip up to 1,600 rail stations of the facility to pre-book tickets. The cheaper fares would only be available at main stations, or over the phone or internet.

Anyone walking into one of the targeted stations to book an advance ticket would be offered only the more expensive standard fare.

NOT ENOUGH jobs, rather than a lack of training and education, is the key factor behind unemployment. That was the finding of a study by a Cambridge economics group released this week. The study explodes New Labour's claims that unemployment is due to a lack of skills and training. "A jobs shortfall appears to be the dominant issue," said the report, especially in "Yorkshire and the Humber, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Northumberland."
