Blair's GM food scandal

TONY BLAIR has sided with US president Bill Clinton in backing the multinationals behind the genetically modified (GM) food industry. At the G8 summit Blair urged unconditional support for the biotechnology industry which develops GM foods.

The European Commission has also caved in to the 2 billion GM industry. Last week commissioners signalled that under pressure from companies like Monsanto they were to scrap a two-year moratorium on approving new GM foods. Meanwhile evidence is emerging that GM crops are being thrust on whole populations without their consent.

In Colombia protesters say that GM trials of cotton, rice, potatoes and tomatoes are taking place without full biosafety laws.
