Teacher shortage growing

GOVERNMENT policies are driving teachers out of their profession. Education ministers admit that the number of unfilled vacancies in teaching rose to 2,660 by January of this year. By the middle of March there were 1,000 fewer applications for secondary teacher training than at the same time last year, and 20 percent fewer than in 1998. Shortages of teachers are increasing despite the government's claims that its performance related pay scheme will attract people into the job.
