Prison deaths

THE FUNERAL of Cheryl Simone Hartman, a young black woman, took place on Thursday of last week. She was found hanged in her cell at Holloway prison, north London, earlier last month.

She had been remanded to Holloway for psychiatric reports before being given a nine month sentence for affray. Deborah Coles is the co-director of INQUEST, which campaigns over deaths in custody.

She says, "Already this year five women have taken their lives in prison-equal to the total last year. "This is an indictment of the treatment of women in prison-many of whom had mental health problems and should not have been there."
