UNISON higher education
Pay fight looms
ADMIN AND support workers in universities and colleges could be heading for a clash with employers over pay. The Universities and Colleges Employers' Association has advised universities and colleges to impose a 3 percent pay rise. The provocative move comes before negotiations at a national level have even begun.
The recent UNISON union higher education conference saw delegates demand a 10 percent rise, and a ballot on action if they didn't get it. UNISON's head of education, Elaine Harrison, says the employers' move is "a flagrant breach of longstanding custom and practice". The best response to the attack would be to prepare a ballot for hard- hitting action as quickly as possible.
