Excuse for crackdown

NEW LABOUR is using the excuse of "driving hooligans out of British football" to force through attacks on civil liberties. Alistair Darling, the social security secretary, wants to rob fans of their unemployment benefit and Jobseeker's Allowance if they are discovered at Euro 2000 matches.

He is using fraud officers to target fans they suspect are on benefits while they are at matches in Europe. New Labour is telling the unemployed they cannot leave the country because they have to be available for work under any circumstances.
